So you want your first tattoo huh?

So you want to get your first tattoo huh! Getting your first tattoo can be both an exciting and nerve-wracking experience. It's a permanent decision, so it's important to take the time to carefully consider what design you want and where you want it placed. Let’s go over some tips to help make the process of getting your first tattoo as smooth as possible.

Research tattoo artists and shops!

Before you decide on a design or book an appointment, it's important to do your research. Look for reputable tattoo artists and shops in your area by reading online reviews and checking out their portfolio on social media. You want to make sure you're working with a skilled artist who has experience with the type of tattoo you want. Not every artist will be good at every style! If you’re looking for a smooth black and grey portrait you wouldn’t go to an artist who’s online portfolio showcases mostly bold and colourful traditional tattoos, and vice versa!

Consider the placement of your tattoo

Another important factor to consider is where on your body you want to get your tattoo. Some areas are more painful than others, so think about your pain tolerance level before deciding on a spot. It's also important to consider how the image will look on certain surfaces of the body. Will distortion be an issue due to sizing and placement? Is what you are asking for too large and detailed for the size and placement you want? These are things any tattooer worth their salt will be able to guide you through and make recommendations. If you’ve done your research and found an artist, I’m assuming you liked what you saw on their page so trust them!

Choose a design that has meaning to you

Your first tattoo is something that you'll have for the rest of your life, so it doesn’t hurt to choose a design that has personal meaning to you. Now, speaking as an artist, I get whatever I want where I want because I like the way it looks. You don’t have to look deeper into some magical reason to get the tattoo, its fine to get what you want because you wanted it, but whether it's a symbol, a phrase, or an image that represents something important to you, make sure it's something you'll be happy with for years to come.

Prepare for the appointment

Once you've chosen your artist, discussed your design and booked your appointment, it's important to prepare for the actual tattoo session. Make sure you get a good night's sleep, eat a full meal beforehand, and stay hydrated. It's also a good idea to wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area where you'll be getting the tattoo.

Take care of your tattoo after the appointment

After your tattoo is finished, your artist will give you instructions on how to take care of it properly. This typically includes keeping it clean and moisturized, avoiding direct sunlight, and refraining from picking at any scabs that may form. Following these instructions is crucial to ensuring that your tattoo heals properly and looks its best.

Getting your first tattoo is a big decision, but it can also be a rewarding and meaningful experience. By doing your research, choosing the appropriate artist, and taking good care of your tattoo after the appointment, you can make sure that your first tattoo is a positive experience that you'll be happy with for years to come. And don’t be surprised when you start thinking about the next one!
